My love of animals began as a child and never waned. As a youngster, my family raised goats. I added horses, cows, chickens, rabbits, and sheep over the years. In the 1980’s I bought my first spinning wheel and loom, but set them aside as life became too busy. Several years ago I was contemplating buying a few sheep again until I became involved in helping a client plan their retirement vision of living on a farm. I introduced them to the possibility of raising alpacas, and I got hooked!
I’m often asked, Why suris? Why don’t you raise huacaya alpacas? Actually, my first alpaca is a lovely silver grey huacaya female. But when I saw the suri and began working around them and handling their fleece, I knew this was the breed I wanted to focus on. I love the silky locks and can imagine the beautiful luster and drape of a hand spun, hand knit shawl. So, yes, I do have several huacaya alpacas and truly appreciate their lofty soft fiber, but the majority of our herd is suri.
My first introduction to alpacas was at Ameripaca Alpaca Breeding Company in Galesville, Maryland. I have to thank Dr. Gail Campbell for the support and direction she has provided as I entered the world of alpacas. Over the last several years I have been able to develop a small herd of the best of Ameripaca’s 20+ years of focused breeding. The Ameripaca name is known nationwide for breeding top quality show and fiber animals.
As I work with my small herd of 15 alpacas, I will continue to focus on quality breeding stock that produce outstanding fiber for the hand spinner, knitting and crochet enthusiasts. Providing a high quality diet and daily interaction with each animal provides a calm and relaxed environment for the animals, which is exhibited in healthy cria and beautiful fiber.
